SEPTEMBER JAZZ AT CHARLIE O’S
CHARLIE O’S 10TH JAZZ ANNIVERSARY!!!

First I would like to thank all of you who came out for our 10 year anniversary party in August. It was truly a magical night of great jazz.  Bill Cunliffe, John Heard and Roy McCurdy were all at the top of their game that night as were all of the outstanding musicians that stopped by and sat in. Charlie would have been so proud and happy. It was truly heartwarming to see so much love and support for live jazz and Charlie O’s.

September always brings us the last summer holiday (we’re closed on the 6th for the holiday) and frantic kids, parents and teachers planning for “back to school.” When all is said and done, we have some very special September nights at Charlie O’s which include a CD Release Party for Chris Colangelo on the 29th as well as a Leukemia & Lymphoma Light the Night Walk Fundraiser for Team UCLA that evening.  Charlie O’s will donate a portion of our sales to this very worthy cause.  There is also a birthday celebration for Brandino on the 1st, a birthday celebration for Janis Mann on the 3rd, a “Welcome Back Barry Zweig” night on the 27th, and there are, of course, other great trios, quartets and quintets, and your favorite LA performers.

Friday and Saturday performances this month with the John Heard Trio (John, Roy McCurdy, Andy Langham, Theo Saunders) include pure jazz vocalist Janis Mann on the 3rd, amazing Rickey Woodard on the 4th, powerful Benn Clatworthy on the 10th, the wonderful Thom Rotella on the 11th, gorgeous and talented vocalist Anna Mjoll on the 17th, Chuck Manning is equally as lovely and makes a gorgeous sound on his tenor and he’s here on the 18th, wonderful and lovely Julie Kelly on the 24th, and legendary Don Menza on the 25th (this is Don’s last performance here until December due to extensive travel abroad). Reservations highly recommended for all of these weekend performances.

Monday performances begin with the Theo Saunders Quartet on the 13th, the Jim Cox Trio (Jim, John Ferraro, Domenic Genova) on the 20th, and “Welcome Back Barry” on the 27th with the Barry Zweig Quartet (Barry, Luther Hughes, Paul Kreibich, Ed Czach). Barry was quite ill for a long time and this is his first gig as a leader since his illness. Please come out and support these great guys.  Reservations are helpful.

Our Tuesday performances include the Sony Holland Quintet (Sony, Theo Saunders, Jerry Holland, Ryan McGillicuddy, Kendall Kay) on the 7th, the John Proulx Trio on the 14th, the Henry Franklin Quartet on the 21st, and the Vardan Ovspian Quartet (Vardan, Simone Vitucci, Ryan McGillicuddy, Zach Harmon) on the 28th.  We recommend reservations for these performances.

The Wednesday line up begins with a birthday celebration for Brandino on the 1st (Brandino, Keith Fiddmont, Andy Langham, Kenny Elliott), the Emil Richards Joe Porcaro Quartet featuring Abe Laboriel and Mike Lang return on the 8th, the Carl Saunders Quartet is here on the 15th, and the Chris Colangelo Quintet is here on the 29th with a CD Release Party for Elaine’s Song and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk Fundraiser for Team UCLA. We’re still working on getting a great group for the 22nd.  Reservations recommended for these performances.

Our Thursday groups include Chuck Berghofer’s Midnight Jazz Band featuring Gary Foster and Tom Ranier on the 2nd, the Phil Norman Tentet (a mini big band with no cover) on the 9th, the Bob Sheppard Quartet on the 16th, the lovely and talented Denise Donatelli on the 23rd, and the Bill Cunliffe Quartet on the 30th (Bill promises very special, young guest jazz performers for this evening).  Reservations are recommended for all of these performances.

Please email or call us with any questions regarding these performances (charlieosjazz@cs.com or 818.994.3058).

We are closed on Sundays in September.

We are located at 13725 Victory Blvd. in Van Nuys (on Victory, just West of Woodman Avenue).   Jo-Ann, Mike, Matt, Naomi, Teesee and Andrea look forward to seeing you in September.  Thank you for your continued support of these great musicians, our wonderful staff and Charlie O’s!

Come to Charlie O’s for the best in jazz entertainment at the “ultimate jazz bar, restaurant” (Don Heckman, LA Times). Charlie O’s has been voted by Downbeat magazine every year as one of the top 100 best jazz clubs in the world since 2001!  "A great intimate jazz club in the valley" said Chuck Niles in the November 2003 issue of Sunset magazine.  Charlie O’s is where all the musicians hang and “all the best jazz players in LA are there” said Mort Sahl. Les McCann says “Charlie O’s is the best jazz club in L.A. Clint Eastwood said “it’s like listening to great jazz in your living room.”  Charlie O’s is one of her favorite jazz spots says Chef Susan Feniger. Our sincere thanks to all of our local fans and to you all over the world for helping to make Charlie O’s so successful!  Thank you all for keeping Charlie O’s dream alive.  We hope to see you in September!
