JULY JAZZ AT CHARLIE O’S

Charlie O’s is the place to be for the hottest jazz this July when we celebrate our own John Heard’s 70th birthday with a big party on July 3rd (this will be John’s last performance for a while as he takes some more time off to take care of his health).  We’ll also be celebrating Ron Jones’ birthday on the 7th with his jazz orchestra Influence, and we’ll have a birthday party for Plas Johnson on the 19th.  Other special evenings include performances by Richie Cole on the 4th and 5th and the great Ernie Watts on the 25th.  All of your favorites return, we’ll have big bands every Monday, all the fun birthday parties and simply the best jazz in town.

Our Monday big bands include the Ron Jones Jazz Orchestra Influence on the 7th, Roger Neumann’s Rather Large Band featuring Madeline Vergari on the 14th, the Emil Richards All Star Big Band on the 21st, and the great Bill Holman’s Big Band on the 28th. These big bands are all filled with our best talent so please come out to support them. There is a $20 cash cover charge every Monday which is good for the entire evening.   Reservations required for big band nights, especially the 8 PM show.

Our Friday and Saturday line ups feature exceptional guests and they perform with Chris Conner, John Giannelli or Jeff Littleton, bass;  Roy McCurdy, Dick Weller or Steve Schaeffer, drums; Nate Morgan, Jon Mayer or Lou Foresteri, piano.  Our outstanding lineup of guests performers include Richie Cole on the 4th and 5th ($10 cash cover for each of these two evenings); Benn Clatworthy on the 11th; Don Menza on the 12th, Azar Lawrence on the 18th, Plas Johnson on the 19th, Ernie Watts on the 25th,  and Rickey Woodard on the 26th.  Reservations highly recommended for all Friday and Saturday performances.

Please join us for one of our outstanding Sunday performances – Ron Anthony and Barry Zweig with Matt Gordy and Tom Warrington on the 6th, the Paul Kreibich Quartet featuring Lanny Morgan with Bill Cunliffe and Isla Eckinger, the Doug Webb Quartet (Doug, Lorca Hart, Joe Bagg) on the 20th, and the Benn Clatworthy Quartet on the 27th.  Reservations are suggested.

Our Tuesday performances include the Charles Owens Quartet (Charles, Nate Morgan, Trevor Ware, Alphonse Mouson) on the 1st; the Jack Sheldon California Cool Quartet on the 8th, the Julie Kelly Quartet (Rich Eames, Jim Hughart, Devin Kelly) on the 15th, the Jennifer Leitham Trio (Jennifer, Josh Nelson, Randy Drake) on the 22nd, and the Joe Bagg Trio (Joe and Roy McCurdy) on the 29th). We have five amazing groups lined up for our Thursday performances which include John Heard’s 70th Birthday Celebration on the 3rd featuring Justo Almario, John Heard, Roy McCurdy and Lanny Hartley; the Emil Richards Joe Porcaro Quartet (Emil, Joe, Mike Lang, Bruce Lett) on the 10th, the very special Pete Christlieb’s Tall & Small Big Band on the 17th ($10 cover charge applied for the 17th); the Don Menza Quintet (Don, Bill Reichenbach, Tom Ranier, Steve Schaeffer, Chris Conner) perform on the 24th, and the Joe LaBarbera Quintet (Joe, Bob Sheppard, Bill Cunliffe, Tom Warrington) on the 31st.  Reservations are highly recommended for all Thursday performances.

We are located at 13725 Victory Blvd. in Van Nuys (on Victory, just West of Woodman Avenue).   Charlie, Jo-Ann, Matt, Caryl, Nicole, Teesee and Naomi all look forward to seeing you in July at Charlie O’s.  Please be sure to keep checking our website, www.charlieos.com, for many new photos, links to our musicians' websites, our monthly calendar and news and coming events.

All of us at Charlie O’s offer our deepest sympathies to Dave Carpenter’s family and loved ones.  Dave was not only an outstanding musician (a musician’s musician) but a wonderful and humble man.  Dave will certainly be missed by all of us.  If you notice some blanks on the calendar for “bass” – those were the nights Dave was suppose to have performed here in July. Peace.

Come to Charlie O’s for the best in jazz entertainment at the “ultimate jazz bar, restaurant” (Don Heckman, LA Times). Charlie O’s has been voted by Downbeat magazine every year as one of the top 100 best jazz clubs in the world since 2001! "A great intimate jazz club in the valley" said Chuck Niles in the November 2003 issue of Sunset magazine.  Charlie O’s is where all of the musicians hang and “all the best jazz players in LA are there” said Mort Sahl. Les McCann says “Charlie O’s is the best jazz club in L.A.  Clint Eastwood said “it’s like listening to great jazz in your living room.” Our sincere thanks to all of you all over the world for helping to make Charlie O’s so successful! We hope to see you in July!
